A closer look
Decades before Silicon Valley decided they needed to "disrupt" everything, a bunch of back-to-the-land hippies dropped the Whole Earth Catalog in 1968. It was essentially the internet printed on dead trees—a massive, densely packed directory of tools, books, and ecological survival gear that you could order through the mail. Steve Jobs notoriously called it the paper search engine, but it was really just a massive masterclass in decentralized media that inadvertently laid the psychological groundwork for today's tech dystopia.
