A closer look
Frogs do not possess a hard palate separating their mouth from their eye sockets, so when they swallow a particularly large insect, they literally retract their eyeballs deep into their skull to help push the food down their throat. Every time this amphibian enjoys a satisfying meal, it has to temporarily blind itself and use its own optical organs as biological plungers to force a struggling grasshopper into its digestive tract. We romanticize these creatures as cute little pond hoppers, but their dining etiquette is an absolutely horrifying display of anatomical multitasking that defies all common sense. Imagine sitting at a fancy restaurant and being forced to sink your eyes into the back of your throat just to swallow a piece of steak, and you will finally begin to understand the gruesome daily reality of being a frog trying to survive in the wild
