Geologists couldn't just call it 'salt,' so they named it halite. It forms massive cubic crystals entirely through the evaporation of ancient enclosed seas. Yes, the very same stuff they mine with massive explosives in dark caverns is exactly what you sprinkle on your french fries. Rock salt is just a spicy mineral.
