A closer look
Avoided conversations do not disappear; they just relocate into your body and behavior. When you swallow irritation to keep the peace, you start keeping a silent scoreboard: how many times you compromised, stayed late, forgave, or covered for someone else. Outwardly you stay agreeable, but inside you rehearse speeches you never say and build a secret case file against the other person. Over time this leaks out as sarcasm, stonewalling, or suddenly explosive anger that seems disproportionate to the last small trigger. The relationship feels unsafe without anyone understanding why. The hard truth is that clarity early is kinder than politeness that rots into resentment. You do not need dramatic showdowns to reset this; you need short, specific statements about behavior and impact, delivered before your scoreboard overflows. Things like When you cancel last minute, I feel like my time does not matter, and I start trusting you less. That sentence is uncomfortable, but far less destructive than months of quiet bitterness.
