Underneath that gorgeously illustrated, beautifully textured paper dust jacket, almost every modern hardcover is bound in a lifeless, cheap slab of grey cardboard. Publishers stopped stamping beautiful art directly onto the actual book boards decades ago to save manufacturing costs, relying entirely on the fragile paper sleeve to provide all the visual value.
