A closer look

Sometimes the most elegant engineering solution is simply defying the laws of nature. Back in the late nineteenth century, the rapidly growing city of Chicago realized their massive sewage output was flowing directly into Lake Michigan, contaminating their own drinking water. Their incredibly subtle solution was to dredge a massive canal and violently force the entire Chicago River to flow violently backward, brilliantly pushing their waste toward St. Louis instead.
