Snapping a plastic character's neck for a sugar pill was supposed to be medicinal. The original candy was heavily marketed to adults as an alternative to cigarettes, and the dispenser was specifically molded to mimic a sleek lighter. Eventually, they realized putting cartoon heads on top and targeting toddlers was infinitely more lucrative than fighting tobacco addiction.
