When more PCs had Doom than Windows 95
Bill Gates must have been thrilled to learn a pixelated demon-slaying simulator was outperforming his multi-million dollar OS launch. Doom's shareware model meant it was passed around on floppy disks like a digital plague. It was so pervasive that Microsoft eventually hired id Software to port the game to Windows just to prove their operating system was actually capable of running something fun.
