From tied bundles to a traveler’s whole load
A bundle is a collection held together; baggage came to name the collection of belongings being carried, not just the wrapping around them. Old French bagage was linked to bundles of possessions. As the word traveled into English, its useful focus was the load itself: what a person brought along.
A name that outlasted the bundle
That shift makes the word flexible. A traveler’s baggage might be one tied package, several bags, or a larger load carried in a vehicle. The belongings can change containers without changing category. “Baggage” describes what must be transported, rather than the shape of any single bag.
