In 1980, the US government deregulated railroads to save them from total financial collapse. The cynical byproduct? Railroad monopolies immediately realized it was much cheaper to abandon unprofitable rural branch lines than actually fix them, effectively telling entire small towns to figure out their own freight logistics while corporate profits skyrocketed.
