What “Kundalini” Means in Yogic Traditions
Kundalini is a concept found in some Hindu yogic and tantric traditions: a latent spiritual power pictured as a serpent coiled near the base of the spine. “Awakening” it means bringing that power into active expression, often described as moving upward through subtle centers of the body called chakras. These are elements of a religious and contemplative framework, not structures identified by anatomy.
Why Sudden Awakening Is Treated Cautiously
In traditions that emphasize kundalini, the aim is not simply to trigger an intense experience. Practice may involve meditation, breath control, bodily disciplines, and guidance from a teacher. The warning about awakening too abruptly reflects a belief that powerful experiences should be approached with preparation and restraint; an unprepared person might find them confusing or destabilizing.
The language can also describe experiences people interpret through this framework, such as unusual sensations, strong emotions, or shifts in attention. Such experiences do not establish that a literal energy has risen through the spine. The caution is part of a spiritual teaching about preparation, not proof of a measurable force inside the body.
