The solar plexus as a symbol of agency
In chakra-based traditions, the solar plexus chakra is part of a symbolic map of the body, not a claim that a measurable energy center sits in the abdomen. It is commonly called Manipura, a Sanskrit name often translated as “city of jewels,” and is associated with the area around the navel. The familiar yellow color and themes of confidence and personal power belong to this symbolic system.
What “inner power” means here
The chakra’s role is less about physical strength than about how a person acts: setting boundaries, making choices, following through, and meeting challenges. In this framework, a sense of steadiness and initiative can be described as the chakra being “balanced,” while insecurity or controlling behavior may be described as an imbalance. These are interpretive ideas within a spiritual tradition, not medical diagnoses.
That distinction helps explain why the image persists in modern yoga and wellness settings. Focusing on the abdomen, posture, breath, or the color yellow can serve as a prompt to reflect on confidence and decision-making. The practice gives an abstract quality—agency—a place in the body and a memorable visual language. Its significance lies in that meaning-making, rather than in a demonstrated effect on an anatomical organ.
