Centuries of lazy pronunciation can officially change the dictionary. The original term was 'an ekename,' where 'eke' meant 'additional' or 'extra' in Middle English. However, when people continually said 'an ekename' quickly out loud, the 'n' sound shifted over. It sounded exactly like 'a nekename,' and eventually the completely incorrect spelling became the universally accepted standard.
