Houdini patented his own drowning machine
When you invent a box specifically designed to drown you upside down, you apparently need to protect your intellectual property. Harry Houdini literally applied for a patent for his Chinese Water Torture Cell to stop rival magicians from copying the stunt. He was less worried about dying of asphyxiation than he was about losing market share.
