Because nothing says friendly digital entertainment like naming your studio after a murderous, sentient supercomputer. The creators of Kirby chose 'HAL' specifically because each letter is exactly one alphabetical step ahead of the letters in IBM. They wanted to signify technological superiority, blissfully ignoring the fact that the cinematic HAL 9000 is famous for ruthlessly eliminating a space crew.
