Jenga Means “Build!”

Jenga comes from the Swahili verb kujenga, meaning “to build.” The game’s name is the command form: “Build!” So it refers not to the wooden tower itself, but to the action players keep taking as they move blocks from the lower levels to the top.

A Name That Fits the Tension

Each turn adds to the tower while making its lower structure less secure. Players are literally building upward, but every block they remove leaves the stack more vulnerable to the next touch. The name captures that contradiction: the tower grows even as it becomes harder to keep standing.

That is why “Build!” suits Jenga better than a name about falling. The collapse is the risk; building is what every player is still trying to do.
