Being the eternal runner-up is literally woven into his linguistic DNA. While brainstorming a name for Mario's palette-swapped brother, the Nintendo team noticed a pizza joint near their headquarters named 'Ruigi'. The brilliant joke is that 'Ruiji' is also the Japanese word for 'similar'. They literally named him 'The guy who looks like the other guy' and forced him to wear green.
