Why books sometimes end with blank pages

Those mysteriously empty pages at the end of a novel annotated with 'Notes' are not there for your convenience. Commercial printing presses fold massive sheets of paper into distinct bundles called signatures, usually in multiples of sixteen or thirty-two. If the author's story naturally ends on an odd fraction, the remaining pages simply must be bound in completely blank.
