A closer look
The cornerstone text of a massive modern religion was translated using the exact same method a street magician uses to hide a coin. Before founding Mormonism, Joseph Smith was a 'scryer' who used a magical seer stone to hunt for buried treasure (unsuccessfully). When it came time to translate the divine golden plates, he didn't even look at them; he just dropped his favorite mystical rock into a white stovepipe hat, shoved his face in, and dictated the text in the dark.
