Trombones use a continuous slide to manipulate pitch

Why bother with precise mechanical valves when you can just manually stretch the instrument's plumbing? The trombone lowers its pitch by physically extending the length of the tubing via a slide. This allows for beautifully seamless glissandos, but it also means the player relies entirely on raw muscle memory to avoid sounding wildly out of tune.
