A closer look

History is written by the victors, but its infrastructure is widened for the carb-loaded Western backpacker. The famous Cu Chi tunnels were originally built to be impossibly narrow, designed for guerrilla warfare, stealth, and psychological torture. Today, the Vietnamese government has thoughtfully supersized select sections of this subterranean death trap so claustrophobic tourists can crawl through without getting permanently wedged in a trapdoor.
