Facial hair has always been a casualty of poor craftsmanship. Originally, the King of Hearts sported a glorious mustache just like his royal peers, but a sloppy artisan copying the deck in the late medieval period simply forgot to carve it into the woodblock. The error became the permanent aesthetic.
