Why a Gift May Stay Wrapped in India
In many Indian settings, a present is treated first as a gesture of goodwill, not as an object to inspect. The giver has chosen something for the recipient; opening it immediately can make the exchange seem focused on the item—its usefulness, value, or quality—rather than on the thought and relationship behind it.
Waiting shifts the emphasis. A gracious response is to thank the giver warmly and acknowledge the gesture, then open the package later. That keeps attention on the person who offered it and avoids putting either party on the spot if the gift is modest, unexpected, or not quite suitable.
Read the Moment, Not a Rulebook
India is culturally and socially diverse, so this is a courtesy that may vary by family, region, and occasion—not a universal rule. Some people will invite you to unwrap a gift right away; others may expect you to set it aside. If the giver encourages you to open it, follow their lead. When the cue is unclear, thanking them and waiting is the safer choice.
The small pause can communicate something important: the relationship matters more than what is inside the wrapping.
