The gaming industry's data preservation is held together by thoughts and prayers. The original source code for 1996's Tomb Raider was completely lost by Eidos. It was only recovered years later because a former developer happened to find a dusty backup CD in his own personal closet. If he had cleaned his room sooner, a piece of gaming history would be gone.
