A closer look

Nothing says stealthy military operation quite like a massive, brightly colored bag of hot air floating above a battlefield. Long before drones, the French military deployed the first aviation corps in 1794. They used tethered hydrogen balloons to quietly observe enemy troop movements from the sky. It actually worked brilliantly, giving commanders a literal bird's-eye view while enemy soldiers stared up in complete, terrified confusion.
