Toto earned more than the actors playing Munchkins
In 1939, Hollywood's pay scale was brutally clear: cute terriers outrank human background actors. Terry, the female Cairn Terrier who played Toto in 'The Wizard of Oz', was paid $125 per week. Meanwhile, the little people who were hired to play the iconic Munchkins were paid just $50 a week. Granted, Terry did do her own stunts, but the wage gap between canine and human actors was a pretty harsh reality check.
