When the supposedly unbreakable Enigma machine wasn't unbreakable enough, the Luftwaffe introduced the 'Uhr' (Clock) in 1944. This nightmare box plugged into the Enigma's plugboard, using an insanely complex 40-position dial to scramble letters in non-reciprocal ways. Instead of making them invincible, it mostly just confused the hell out of their own operators and actually introduced cryptographic flaws that Allied codebreakers immediately exploited to read their mail.
