Expanding gases cool down rapidly without any added energy
If you spray an aerosol can for too long and the metal gets freezing cold, you have just experienced adiabatic expansion. When pressurized gas suddenly expands into a larger volume, the molecules are forced to use their own internal kinetic energy to spread out. Since they expend all their effort moving away from each other, the overall temperature plummets dramatically.
