Fabry and Buisson discovered the Earth ozone layer

Two French physicists decided to figure out exactly why the sun wasn't actively frying the planet with raw ultraviolet radiation. By passing incoming light through precise optical equipment, they realized an invisible layer of gas was blocking the worst of the rays. They essentially mapped out the planet's built-in sunscreen high up in the stratosphere.
