A closer look
Necessity is the mother of incredibly overpriced storage boxes. Originally, automobiles featured massive, continuous bench seats that stretched from door to door. When manufacturers switched to individual 'bucket' seats for better lateral support, it left a cavernous, useless trench right in the middle of the cabin where loose change and dropped french fries went to die. The center console was born purely out of a desperate need to plug that ugly gap, instantly becoming the designated junk drawer of the vehicle.
