A closer look
People who brag about being brutally honest are usually just emotionally lazy. Bluntness is easy; it takes zero effort to drop your raw reaction on someone and walk away. What is hard is honesty with responsibility: saying the truth while staying calm, specific, and open to being wrong. When someone prefaces a comment with I am just being honest, they are warning you that they care more about venting than about impact. This creates a subtle power game. If you react, you are sensitive. If you stay quiet, you silently accept their version of reality. The way out is to separate content from delivery. You can say, I am willing to hear your point, but not in that tone, or I want feedback, not insults. That forces them to choose: be actually helpful or admit they just wanted to hit you with their feelings and call it truth.
