How a braid could add length
A hair extension works by joining extra strands to the wearer’s own hair. In a braid, the natural hair and added hair are woven together, so the extra length becomes part of the style rather than sitting on top like a separate covering. The same method can also make a braid look fuller.
The result depends on how the added hair is worked in: it can lengthen a lock, thicken it, or do both. “Locks” here simply means sections of hair styled together; the detail does not require imagining a full wig or an elaborate hairpiece.

For some Norse people, braiding in extra hair offered a way to change the look of their own hair without waiting for it to grow.
