A closer look

You almost never have to trim a modern candle because it is actively trying to destroy itself. Older wicks were entirely straight strings that aggressively smoked up the house as they refused to cleanly disintegrate. Eventually, manufacturers figured out exactly how to braid the cotton so that the heat forces the tip to violently curl sideways, moving exactly out of the flame center and aggressively burning itself to absolute microscopic ash.
