A closer look
Master Chief from the Halo video game franchise is voiced by Steve Downes, a guy who spent the majority of his career working as an adult contemporary radio disc jockey in Chicago. When he was not smoothly introducing soft rock hits from Fleetwood Mac or Phil Collins to middle-aged commuters stuck in traffic, he was in a recording booth providing the gruff, stoic one-liners for a genetically enhanced super-soldier slaughtering alien zealots across the galaxy. Microsoft basically looked at a man whose day job involved soothing lonely housewives with the sounds of easy listening and decided he was the perfect audio representation of humanity's last hope for survival. It makes you wonder how many Covenant elites were brutally plasma-grenaded to the mental backdrop of a smooth jazz FM station broadcast, making the Master Chief technically the most lethal radio personality in human history
