After a hurricane nearly wiped them off the map in 1900, the city of Galveston didn't just rebuild—they literally jacked up their entire transit infrastructure, railways and all, using hand-turned screws. They then pumped ocean sand underneath to raise the ground level by 17 feet, flexing on Mother Nature with an absurd display of civic stubbornness.
