First class once meant a wicker chair

The golden age of flying was actually completely miserable. In the 1920s, early passenger planes were just unpressurized, freezing tin cans. Paying a premium for 'first class' didn't get you a lie-flat bed and free champagne; it literally just meant you got to sit on a lightweight wicker patio chair that wasn't bolted to the vibrating floor, trying desperately not to freeze to death.
