Blowing bubbles used to require bleeding a jungle tree. Before synthetic plastics took over, chewing gum relied entirely on chicle, an elastic sap tapped from sapodilla trees in Central America. Harvesters would scale the trunks with machetes to collect the natural rubber that kept your jaw occupied.
