Condenser microphones require a phantom electric charge

Unlike rugged dynamic microphones that can survive a nuclear blast, studio condensers are fragile prima donnas. They require an active, constant 48-volt current of electricity—creepily termed 'phantom power'—just to charge the incredibly thin internal capacitor plates. Without that invisible jolt of juice riding up the microphone cable, they capture absolutely nothing but dead silence.
