A closer look

Before the glorious invention of paper, moving a large library required a fleet of sturdy oxen. Scribes meticulously painted official characters onto narrow, rigid strips of bamboo, which were then violently tied together with string into incredibly heavy, bulky bundles. Dropping a book meant literally shattering the text. The sheer physical effort required to transport official documents is exactly why paper became an instant blockbuster.
