Higher education in its infancy was not exactly a meritocracy. Early universities were largely populated by wealthy teenagers who essentially viewed college as an incredibly expensive social club. They frequently rioted, ignored lectures, and terrorized the local townspeople, knowing their elite status would protect them from any real academic consequences.
