A closer look
That takeout container you casually threw away ten years ago is making a very personal comeback. UV radiation and ocean currents ruthlessly shred floating consumer plastics into microscopic nanoplastics. Because these particles are the exact same size as natural marine algae, filter-feeding zooplankton readily gorge on them. Thanks to trophic transfer, the problem mathematically explodes: a small fish eats thousands of polluted plankton, a tuna eats hundreds of polluted fish, and the indigestible plastic chemically magnifies at each step. By the time that apex predator reaches a dinner plate, it is heavily laced with chemical polymers designed to outlive us all.
