Ernest Rutherford directed radioactive particles at a ridiculously thin sheet of gold, expecting them all to pass straight through. When a few bounced completely backwards, he realized atoms were mostly composed of sheer empty space surrounding a dense core. It was the scientific equivalent of firing a cannonball at tissue paper and watching it ricochet.
