Sputter deposition coats objects atom by single atom
HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART
When dipping something in paint is far too imprecise, you blast it with ions in a vacuum. In sputter deposition, heavy gas ions are forcefully smashed into a block of source material like gold or aluminum. The impact physically knocks solitary atoms off the block, sending a mist of raw atoms flying across the chamber to coat the target object in a flawless, microscopically thin layer of pure metal.
