Nintendo didn't choose that hideous split-pea soup color scheme for aesthetic brilliance. The stark greenish-yellow background provided the absolute highest contrast for the crude black pixels while draining the absolute bare minimum from the batteries. It was a visually offensive compromise that somehow dominated the entire portable electronics market.
