Pythias the Greek explorer claimed to have found a mystical northern island of eternal ice named Thule

If you sail far enough north and survive, you essentially get to make up whatever geographical lies you want. Pythias ventured towards the Arctic in 325 BC and returned with wild tales of 'Thule,' an island where the sun barely set and the ocean turned into a thick, magical jelly that you could neither walk on nor sail through. The ancient Greeks essentially treated him like a guy claiming he got abducted by aliens.
