Theater kids will tell you whistling on stage curses the production, but the origin is purely about avoiding blunt force trauma. Early stagehands were often off-duty sailors who used ship whistles to cue the dropping of heavy sandbag scenery. If some clueless actor whistled a jaunty tune, a sailor would drop a massive weight right on their head.
