What made the system terrifying was not just physical pain, but social death. Being branded, mutilated, or paraded in stocks publicly marked you for life as untrustworthy. In small communities, reputation was survival; once destroyed, you might as well be exiled.

Today, we no longer put people in town squares, but online shaming and permanent criminal records can function similarly. A single mistake — recorded, shared, and never forgotten by search engines — can cut off jobs, housing, and relationships. We pretend this is more 'civilized' than older punishments, yet the long tail of exclusion can be just as severe.
