A closer look
Nikolai Berdyaev got kicked out of Soviet Russia for refusing to conform to Marxist materialism, mostly because he believed human creativity was a literal mystical superpower. In his wildly cynical yet uplifting anthropology, he argued that God didn't create a finished universe; He left it half-baked specifically so humans could finish the job through art and rebellion. Berdyaev hated the traditional, submissive view of religion, claiming that actual spiritual freedom requires you to aggressively assert your own creative will against the cosmos. For him, writing a poem was practically a divine strike against tyranny.
