Civic duty is mandatory, but fair compensation is entirely optional. Citizens forced to take time away from their livelihoods to serve on a jury are typically handed a daily stipend so abysmally low it barely covers the cost of a parking space and a sandwich. While the judges, attorneys, and expert witnesses pull in massive salaries, the actual individuals deciding the fate of the case are expected to absorb massive personal losses for the privilege of serving.
