In 1911, he and two companions dragged a sledge through the absolute darkness of the Antarctic winter at -70 degrees Fahrenheit. Their grand prize? Three Emperor penguin eggs, which they wrongly believed held the evolutionary link between birds and reptiles. The journey was so brutal his teeth literally shattered from the shivering. When he finally returned to London and presented his hard-won eggs to the Natural History Museum, the curator basically shrugged and made him wait in the hallway. Best terrible vacation ever.
